Do I need a prescription to purchase contacts or glasses in the US?

Updated over a week ago

When placing or updating orders for eyeglasses or contact lenses in the US, it is crucial to follow proper procedures to ensure your order is processed accurately and legally. This article explains how to provide the necessary prescription details and outlines alternative methods when you lack a digital or written prescription at hand.

Overview of Prescription Requirements

  • Contact Lenses: A valid contact lens prescription is legally required for order processing. Ensure that the prescription matches the exact lenses you are ordering, including the brand and type. The prescription also has to be valid. Most prescriptions expire within a year, unless otherwise specified by the doctor.

  • Contact lens prescriptions are brand-specific. For example, a prescription for 1-Day Acuvue Moist cannot be used to order MyDay Daily Disposable lenses. To order a different brand, a new prescription specifying that brand is required.

  • If your prescription includes cylinder (CYL), an Axis value is also required. For instance, if the right eye has a cylinder, you must specify the Axis (e.g., 180).

  • Eyeglasses: If you are sure the parameters you've entered are correct, a prescription isn't needed. However, we do recommend uploading it when placing the order so we can verify the information and ensure the glasses are done with the correct prescription.

Providing Prescription Details Without a Digital Copy

If you do not have a digital or written copy of your prescription, we can contact the doctor's office on your behalf. Just provide us with their contact information and we'll take care of the rest!

Options for Missing Details

If a prescription is missing some key details, we can also contact the doctor to get the information for you.

  1. Verify that your prescription matches the brand you are trying to order.

  2. Consult your eye care provider to determine whether an alternative power or brand is suitable for your needs.

  3. Obtain a new prescription if necessary to match the brand or power options available on Kits.com.

Compliance for Specific Lenses or Brands

  • If your prescription does not specify the exact lens brand that you are trying to purchase, the order cannot be processed. Only lenses that match the exact specifications of a verified prescription can be ordered, as different brands or types require professional approval. That being said, if your doctor can approve the different brand, we can contact them to get confirmation after you've spoken with the doctor and requested the change.

  • In the US all contact lens prescriptions MUST include the exact name of the brand you were prescribed, the parameters and the expiration date. If those details are not present on the prescription, please reach out to the doctor and ask them to add them as we will not be able to process the order without a prescription showing these details.

  • Cylinder correction for astigmatism is only available for specific product lines, such as 'Dailies Total 1 for Astigmatism.' If you select regular Dailies Total 1 lenses, the option to enter cylinder correction will not appear.

  • Certain cylinder powers may not be available in some specific parameter combinations.

Differences Between Eyeglasses and Contact Lenses Prescriptions

Eyeglasses and contact lens prescriptions are distinct because glasses sit away from the eye while contacts rest directly on the eye. Orders for contact lenses must be based on a contact lens prescription.

Summary

Providing accurate and complete prescription information is essential for processing and fulfilling your order with us. Whether uploading a prescription, or asking us to contact the doctor's office, please ensure all details comply with the legal requirements and product specifications. Stick to documented procedures to avoid delays and ensure your eyewear meets your needs. Understanding technical limitations, such as cylinder power availability and multifocal add power selection, as well as platform-specific requirements, ensures a smoother ordering process and helps you select the most appropriate lenses for your needs.
